Physics Design Competition

When we were first given our supplies in the morning, all of us were fairly overwhelmed- how were we supposed to make a car out of all of these parts? We did begin to put parts together, and our confidence grew. We didn't really think about brainstorming because we didn't see value in it- we just wanted to try as best we could making a car. Before lunch began, we had finished building our car, but we couldn't get it to move. Our group spent the majority of lunch attempting to fix it, but to no avail. We finally decided to rebuild our entire car even though we only had about 30 minutes left. We scaled our large, unstable 4-wheeled car into a thin, aerodynamic car with 3 wheels. This design was much more stable than the previous one, and consequently, the car actually moved! From our experiences at HSDC 2016, we learned the benefits of brainstorming, and that bigger isn’t always better. All of us enjoyed our time here, and we look forward to next year’s competition.

Our task for this competition was to build a motorized car that could travel 25 ft with the highest possible velocity using the materials given to us.  We immediately determined that, to achieve the highest possible velocity, we would need to have the largest gear attached to the motor, immediately followed by a small gear.  We used a design with four wheels and the motor mounted at the back.  The battery was mounted at the front to better balance the design.  Another important aspect of our design was the usage of bevel gears, which change the direction of rotation from horizontal to vertical, allowing us to adequately spin the rear axle of our design, resulting is rear wheel drive.  The major drawback we faced was that the gears did not initially properly make contact and therefore the car did not move.  We solved this problem by using a spacer to keep the lowermost gear in place and therefore maintain proper contact.  We were ecstatic to see that our design was able to move just in time for the presentation. We then presented our design the the panel of judges, explaining the various engineering principles we applied in our design, as well as our car’s capacity for zombie defence!   Overall, we really enjoyed the day, being able to experiment and toy around with various designs as well as to work as a team to overcome challenges.  Although towards the end we were incredibly doubtful that our design would move, we managed to persevere with a car that we are truly proud of.

FJB Grade 9 Science Fair

March 23, 2016.
The FJB Grade 9 Academic Science students took part in the Science Fair.
There were a total of 15 projects which covered topics from sports (hockey, baseball and tennis) to Water Filtration, Germs and even which Tea stains your teeth more.
The projects and the students hosted and explained their projects to visiting classes.
A special thanks to our senior science students for an amazing judging job.










Our life skills students also came to check out all the excitement with Mrs. Limarzi.

Grade 9 Semester 2

Grade 9 Academic science activity in critical thinking on day 1 of Semester 2.  It's never too early to get the juices flowing or the towers built.  This activity involvs the grade 9 students trying to build the Tallest Freestanding Tower they can.

Brennan Olympic Science (B.O.S)

The Brennan Science Department is currently hosting 7 classes from our feeder schools in a Brennan Science Challenge.  Each week students from these classes work in small groups and  are invited to participate in a new activity and submit it to B.O.S via google classroom.

The top 6 teams are ranked each week. At the end of  the 10 week science challenge, the top 6 teams will be invited to visit Brennan for a Science Olympiad to claim bragging rights as the best elementary science school team.

Oct 23 Mole day

October 23rd marks the day we celebrate Mole Day.
A mole is a unit of measurement in chemistry and is 6.022 x 10 23.This is Avogadro's constant.

Grade 9 Science:  Micro-Ecosystem Project


Our students had to construct a micro-ecosystem that included organisms at different trophic levels. They had to include the carbon cycle, the nitrogen cycle, the water cycle and the phosphorus cycle.




They needed to consider populations and carrying capacity and their ecosystem must be sustainable.

Their ecosystems were sealed so that no air or water could enter or leave the system.   Only sunlight is permitted through.



They had to problem solve, think critically and work together in teams to accomplish the practical task of building the ecosystem as well as putting together a written report and oral presentation to the class.



 They caught bugs, the spiders were big and scary!!
The spiders escaped...

They dug up weeds, they planted grass seed, they watched the plants grow mold....

The potato bugs drowned in the pools of water...



The students were frustrated...they problem solved,
they laughed and screamed (especially when the spiders got loose) and cried...

But mostly they had fun!!!!!


They presented their ecosystems to the class...
they read poems, they drew posters,  they sang and danced....
They even performed a song accompanied by guitar "When this project ends"...



Way to go Grade 9's now let's keep all of God's creatures in our prayers and hope they survive the next month of the  SURVIVAL GAMES
